How to recognise United Kingdom from the road
Drives on the left
Narrow lanes, hedgerows and brick terraces. The United Kingdom gives itself away quickly once you know where to look, starting with the side of the road.
What to look for
Traffic on the left
Cars drive on the left, so oncoming traffic passes on your right and parked cars face the way you are looking on the left-hand kerb.
Yellow lines at the kerb
Single and double yellow lines along the kerb mark parking restrictions. Centre lines are white.
Miles, not kilometres
Distances are in miles and speed limits in miles per hour, shown as a number in a red circle with no unit.
Two colours of number plate
Plates are white at the front and yellow at the back.
Hedgerows and stone walls
Lowland fields are divided by thick hedgerows. In the hills, dry-stone walls take over.
