How to recognise Germany from the road

Drives on the right

Tidy villages, forests and well-kept roads. German road signs follow a strict system that makes the country easy to confirm.

What to look for

1

Yellow town signs

The sign at the entrance to every town and village is yellow, with the name in black.

2

Long, narrow plates

Plates are white with the blue EU band, starting with one to three letters for the town or district.

3

German spelling

Look for ß, ü, ö and ä, and long compound words on shop signs.

4

Timber frames and forest

Half-timbered houses are common in older villages, and dense spruce and beech forest is never far away.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Germany, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
