How to recognise Slovenia from the road

Drives on the right

Alpine meadows, forests and red-roofed villages. Slovenia is small, green and full of hayracks.

What to look for

1

Slovene letters

Look for č, š and ž. Unlike Croatian, Slovene does not use ć or đ.

2

Hayracks

Tall wooden hayracks, called kozolec, stand in the fields, a sight found almost nowhere else.

3

Forest and mountains

More than half the country is forest, with the Alps to the north.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Slovenia, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
