How to recognise Estonia from the road

Drives on the right

Forest, bog and sea. Estonian is closer to Finnish than to its Baltic neighbours.

What to look for

1

The letter õ

Estonian uses õ, alongside ä, ö and ü.

2

Double letters

Like Finnish, words are full of doubled letters, such as aa, ee and kk.

3

Forest and coast

Low, flat forest and bog cover much of the land, with a long, rocky coastline.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Estonia, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
