How to recognise Austria from the road

Drives on the right

Alpine valleys, tidy villages and onion-domed churches. Austria speaks German, but its plates set it apart from Germany.

What to look for

1

Red-striped plates

Austrian plates are white with a thin red stripe along the top and bottom edges, alongside the blue EU band.

2

German signs

Signs are in German, so look for ß, ü, ö and ä.

3

The Alps

Much of the country is mountainous, with steep green valleys and wooden balconies full of flowers.

4

Onion domes

Village churches often have onion-shaped domes on their towers.
