How to recognise Latvia from the road

Drives on the right

Forest, lakes and long straight roads. Latvian has its own set of marks above and below the letters.

What to look for

1

Macrons

Latvian marks long vowels with a line above: ā, ē, ī and ū.

2

Letters with a comma

Look for ķ, ļ, ņ and ģ, with a small comma beneath or above.

3

Flat and green

The countryside is flat, with forest, farmland and wooden farmhouses.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Latvia, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
