How to recognise Croatia from the road

Drives on the right

Pale limestone, blue sea and terracotta roofs along the coast, green farmland inland. Croatia has one of the most distinctive number plates in Europe.

What to look for

1

A chequered shield

Croatian plates carry the red and white chequered coat of arms between the letters and numbers.

2

Croatian letters

Look for č, ć, š, ž and đ.

3

Limestone coast

Along the Adriatic, bare white limestone hills drop to the sea, with stone houses and terracotta roofs.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Croatia, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
