How to recognise Serbia from the road

Drives on the right

Rolling farmland, plum orchards and Orthodox churches. Serbia writes in two alphabets at once.

What to look for

1

Two alphabets

Signs use both Cyrillic and Latin letters, often side by side.

2

Serbian Cyrillic

Look for the letters ћ, ђ and џ, which Russian and Bulgarian do not use.

3

Orchards and fields

Plum orchards, maize fields and gentle hills are typical of the countryside.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Serbia, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
