How to recognise Spain from the road

Drives on the right

Dry plateaus, olive groves and whitewashed towns in the south, green hills in the north. Language on the signs often tells you the region as well as the country.

What to look for

1

One blue band

Spanish plates are white with a single blue EU band on the left and no regional marker.

2

More than one language

Signs are in Spanish, and often also in Catalan, Basque or Galician depending on the region.

3

Terracotta and white

Terracotta roof tiles are everywhere. In the south, walls are often whitewashed.

4

The dry interior

Much of the centre is a high, dry plateau with wide fields and few trees.
