How to recognise Switzerland from the road

Drives on the right

Mountains, lakes and immaculate villages, in three main languages. The plates are the giveaway.

What to look for

1

No EU band

Swiss plates are white with no blue EU band. They carry the Swiss shield and the shield of the canton.

2

Three languages

Signs are in German, French or Italian depending on the region.

3

Green motorway signs

Motorway signs are green, and ordinary road signs are blue.

4

Mountains everywhere

Steep green valleys, wooden chalets and mountains in the background are typical.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Switzerland, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
