How to recognise Netherlands from the road

Drives on the right

Flat, orderly and full of bicycles. The Netherlands has two clues that almost nowhere else shares.

What to look for

1

Yellow plates

Dutch number plates are yellow, front and back.

2

Red cycle paths

Cycle paths are surfaced in red asphalt and run alongside most roads.

3

Dutch spelling

Look for double vowels like aa and oo, and the pairing ij, as in dijk.

4

Flat land and brick

The land is completely flat, often crossed by canals and ditches, and houses are mostly brick.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in the Netherlands, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
