How to recognise Finland from the road

Drives on the right

Lakes, pine and birch, and a language unlike any of its neighbours. Finland is flat, quiet and very readable.

What to look for

1

Yellow centre lines

Like Norway, Finland uses yellow centre lines on two-way roads.

2

Double letters

Finnish words are full of doubled letters, like aa, ää, kk and tt. Some areas add Swedish names on the same sign.

3

Flat and forested

The land is low and flat, with pine, spruce and birch and frequent glimpses of lakes.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Finland, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
