How to recognise Greece from the road

Drives on the right

Dry hills, olive trees and flat-roofed concrete houses. The alphabet is the giveaway, but there is plenty more to read.

What to look for

1

The Greek alphabet

Signs use the Greek alphabet, often with a Latin transliteration underneath for place names.

2

Unfinished roofs

Many houses have flat roofs with steel reinforcing bars left sticking up, ready for another floor.

3

Olives and scrub

Olive groves and low, dry scrub cover the hills, with bare rock showing through.

4

Roadside shrines

Small model chapels on posts stand at the roadside, often marking the site of an accident.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Greece, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
