How to recognise Ireland from the road

Drives on the left

Stone walls, green fields and a second language on every sign. Ireland drives on the left like its neighbour, but plenty sets it apart.

What to look for

1

Traffic on the left

Ireland drives on the left, like the United Kingdom.

2

Irish and English signs

Place names appear in Irish and English, with the Irish usually in italics.

3

Kilometres

Speed limits are in km/h and distances in kilometres, unlike Northern Ireland across the border.

4

Yellow edge lines

Many roads have yellow lines along the edge, marking off the hard shoulder.

5

County plates

Plates are white with the blue EU band and a short county code, such as D for Dublin.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Ireland, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
