How to recognise Bulgaria from the road

Drives on the right

Mountains, sunflower fields and Cyrillic signs inside the European Union. That combination narrows things down quickly.

What to look for

1

Cyrillic in the EU

Signs use the Cyrillic alphabet, often with a Latin version underneath, and plates carry the blue EU band.

2

Apartment blocks

Towns have many large concrete apartment blocks from the communist era.

3

Mountains and fields

Mountain ranges run across the country, with wide fields of sunflowers and wheat between them.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Bulgaria, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
