How to recognise Poland from the road

Drives on the right

Flat farmland, birch woods and long straight roads between towns. The language is the quickest way in.

What to look for

1

Polish letters

Look for ł, ą, ę, ś and ż on signs and shopfronts, and clusters like sz and cz.

2

One blue band

Plates are white with the blue EU band on the left.

3

Flat and open

Most of the country is low and flat, with wide fields, birch and pine woods.

4

Apartment blocks

Towns often have large post-war apartment blocks alongside older houses with steep roofs.
