How to recognise Romania from the road

Drives on the right

Villages strung along a single road, horse carts and the Carpathians in the distance. Romanian is a Latin language, which helps.

What to look for

1

Romanian letters

Look for ă, â, î, ș and ț. The words look close to Italian or Spanish.

2

County plates

Plates are white with the blue EU band and start with a county code, such as B for Bucharest.

3

Long villages

Villages often stretch for kilometres along one road, with houses behind fences and gates.

4

Horse carts

In rural areas, horse-drawn carts still share the road with cars.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Romania, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
