How to recognise United States from the road

Drives on the right

Wide roads, big lots and wooden utility poles. The United States has huge variety in landscape, but its road conventions are very consistent.

What to look for

1

Yellow in the middle

A yellow centre line separates traffic going in opposite directions. Edge lines are white.

2

Miles and mph

Speed limits are posted on white rectangular signs reading SPEED LIMIT, in miles per hour.

3

Mailboxes at the road

In suburbs and the countryside, mailboxes on posts stand at the end of each driveway.

4

Space

Houses sit back from the road on large plots, and roads are wide with generous shoulders.
