How to recognise Costa Rica from the road

Drives on the right

Rainforest, volcanoes and small towns with bright paint and metal roofs.

What to look for

1

Spanish signs

Signs are in Spanish.

2

Grilles and tin roofs

Houses are often single-storey, with metal grilles over the windows and corrugated metal roofs.

3

Lush hills

Steep green hills, coffee farms and rainforest surround most roads.

4

Red taxis

Official taxis are red, with a yellow triangle on the front doors.

5

Directions from landmarks

Few streets have name signs. Addresses are given as distances from a landmark, such as 200 metres north of the church.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Costa Rica, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
