How to recognise Argentina from the road

Drives on the right

Endless flat pampas, eucalyptus windbreaks and dry Patagonian steppe in the south. Argentina is big and often empty.

What to look for

1

Spanish signs

Signs are in Spanish, with distances in kilometres.

2

White plates with a blue band

Newer plates are white with a blue band across the top, a format shared with Brazil and Uruguay.

3

Flat to the horizon

Around Buenos Aires and inland, the pampas are completely flat, broken only by rows of eucalyptus.

4

The sun in the north

Argentina is in the southern hemisphere, so the midday sun sits to the north.
