How to recognise Brazil from the road

Drives on the right

Red earth, palm trees and Portuguese everywhere. Brazil is vast, but a few clues work almost anywhere in it.

What to look for

1

Portuguese, not Spanish

Look for ão, ç and words like rua and avenida. Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in South America.

2

White plates with a blue band

Newer plates are white with a blue band across the top, a format shared with some neighbouring countries.

3

Red soil

Deep red earth is common in the interior, on verges and unpaved roads.

4

Yellow centre lines

Opposing traffic is divided by yellow lines.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Brazil, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
