How to recognise Chile from the road

Drives on the right

Desert in the north, vineyards in the middle, windswept Patagonia in the south. Chile is long and thin, so the landscape changes fast.

What to look for

1

Spanish signs

Signs are in Spanish, with distances in kilometres.

2

Mountains to the east

In much of the country the Andes are visible, and they always lie to the east.

3

The sun in the north

Chile is in the southern hemisphere, so the midday sun sits to the north.

4

Patagonian towns

In the far south, houses are often clad in painted corrugated metal against the wind.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Chile, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
