How to recognise Peru from the road

Drives on the right

Desert coast, high Andes and Amazon rainforest, all in one country. The landscape changes completely depending on where you land.

What to look for

1

Spanish and Quechua

Signs are in Spanish, and place names often come from Quechua, full of k, q and hua.

2

Mototaxis

Three-wheeled motorcycle taxis are common in towns.

3

Adobe and brick

Houses are often unpainted brick or adobe, sometimes left unfinished with bars sticking out of the roof.

4

Desert or mountains

The coast is bare desert, the interior is the high Andes, and the east is rainforest.

Try it for real

Placivago can drop you in Peru, or anywhere else across its 195 countries. Three real street-level places a day, no landmarks, no names. Free, and about six minutes.
