How to recognise Vietnam from the road

Drives on the right

Tall, narrow houses, scooters and rice paddies. Vietnam uses the Latin alphabet, but with more accents than anywhere else.

What to look for

1

Traffic on the right

Vietnam drives on the right, while Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia drive on the left.

2

Heavy accents

Vietnamese is written in Latin letters stacked with accents, such as ư, ơ, đ and ế.

3

Tube houses

Houses are tall and very narrow, often several storeys high and only one room wide.

4

Scooters and paddies

Scooters dominate the roads, and flat green rice paddies fill the river deltas.
