How to recognise Kazakhstan from the road

Drives on the right

Flat steppe to the horizon, wide roads and big skies. Kazakhstan uses Cyrillic with letters of its own.

What to look for

1

Kazakh letters

Look for ә, қ, ң, ғ and ұ, which Russian does not use. Russian is common on signs too.

2

Steppe

Much of the country is flat, dry grassland with very few trees.

3

Wide and empty

Roads are long and straight, with huge distances between towns.

Try it for real
